Three rules that outlive any size chart
- Aspect ratio beats exact pixels: networks rescale happily but crop ruthlessly. Match the ratio and the composition survives; miss it and the network decides what gets cut.
- Design for the smallest rendering, not the upload. Thumbnails, grid tiles, and feed previews are where images are actually judged.
- One image rarely fits all: the 1200 x 630 link card, the 1080 x 1350 feed portrait, and the 1080 x 1920 story are three different canvases. Export per destination (our resizer does all of them from one source).
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Instagram post be?
1080 x 1080 for a square post, 1080 x 1350 for portrait (the most screen area in the feed), 1080 x 566 for landscape, and 1080 x 1920 for Stories and Reel covers. Portrait posts crop to square in your profile grid, so check that the center crop keeps the subject.
What is the correct og:image size for link previews?
1200 x 630. That single size renders correctly as the large link card on X, Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack, and Discord, which is why it doubles as the X 'link card' entry above. Keep critical text away from the edges; some surfaces crop a little.
What size is a YouTube thumbnail?
1280 x 720, a straight 16:9. Design it to survive tiny: most impressions of a thumbnail happen at phone-search size, so if the text is not readable at 320 pixels wide it is not readable where it counts.
Why do my images look blurry after uploading?
Usually one of two things: the source was smaller than the target size so the network upscaled it, or heavy recompression on the network's side. Upload at exactly the listed pixels (or an integer multiple) and keep text large; every network recompresses, and sharp input survives it best.
How current are these sizes?
