Give each salon post up to five hashtags, which is all Instagram allows on a post or Reel: two or three naming the technique in the photo (#Balayage, #Blowout), one for your town (#NashvilleHairSalon), and your salon's name. A colour correction and a fringe trim deserve different tags, so choose them post by post.
The hashtags worth using for a hair salon
What you cut and colour
Name the technique, not the industry. Someone who wants balayage looks up #Balayage. #Blowout is the American word and #BlowDry the British one, and #HairColor and #HairColour are separate tags, so use the spelling your clients use.
Where you are
One tag pairing your town with the word your clients use for you, salon or hairdresser. It is the tag that reaches people who could book a chair this month.
The pattern: #[Town]HairSalon or #[Town]Hairdresser
- Nashville: #NashvilleHairSalon #NashvilleHair
- Manchester: #ManchesterHairdresser #ManchesterSalon
- Toronto: #TorontoHairSalon #TorontoHairStylist
Your own tag
Your salon's name as one tag on every post. Put it on the booking confirmation too, so clients who post their new colour from the car know what to add.
For example: #HarlowAndPine
Five tags for one real post
The post: “Sofia just finished a four-hour balayage correction. Two openings this Thursday afternoon if you want her chair.”
What the post shows, where the business is, and its own name. Five tags, each one earning its place.
Tags to skip
- #hair, #hairstyle, #beauty. These are scrolled for celebrity looks and product ads from every country. Someone choosing a salon across town won't find you among them.
- #Balayage on foil highlights. Clients book from the photo and ask for exactly what the tag said. If it was foils, tag #Highlights and skip the awkward consultation.
- #HairTransformation on a trim. People browse it for big changes, like grown-out colour fixed or long hair cut to a bob. Keep it for those, so it still means something on your grid.
- #NoFilter on edited colour. Colour clients judge the shade from your photo. If an edit or a warm filter shifted the tone, the tag is a promise the chair won't keep.
Seasonal tags
- Prom season (spring in the US, late June in the UK): #PromHair #PromUpdo
- Wedding season (summer): #BridalHair #WeddingHair
- Autumn: #FallHairColor #AutumnHair
- December: #HolidayHair #PartyHair
Only on posts that are about that season. A Christmas tag on a plain Tuesday loaf is noise.
